At FRHS India, clients are at the center of what we do. We work by prioritising client centeredness. To enable our clients to exercise their sexual and reproductive rights and choice, our program implementation is two pronged :

Service Delivery

We believe that every woman has the right to choose when and how many children she has. To enable women to exercise this choice and take care of their own and their family’s wellbeing, we provide a range of contraceptive choices and comprehensive abortion care at our clinics and through our outreach teams.

In addition, we work with selected public sector sites to improve the quality of family planning services delivered by them.

Family Planning

India’s national family planning program is among the oldest and largest in the world. In spite of this, even today nationally 9.4% of couples in the reproductive age group (married women in the age group 15-49 years) have an unmet need for family planning (National Family Health Survey, 2019-2023).

Our service delivery teams provide information and counseling on a range of modern family planning methods, to enable our clients to choose a method that suits them the best. We provide the following family planning methods:

Comprehensive Abortion Care

In India, an estimated 15.6 million abortions take place annually. Out of these, a majority 81% are carried out using Medical Abortion method. About 5% of the estimated 15.6 million abortions in India are estimated to be unsafe, in spite of a liberal Medical Termination of Pregnancy Act which allows abortion up to 20 weeks gestation. Women are unable to access safe abortions in India due to several reasons including lack of awareness on legality of abortion, social stigma and low number of registered MTP providers offering MTP services. Conflation with other laws like Pre Conception and Pre Natal Diagnostics Techniques Act also exacerbates the accessibility barriers.

Our clinics provide both surgical and medical methods of abortion. Surgical abortions are provided using Manual Vacuum Aspiration and medical abortions using a combination of Mifepristone and Misoprostol. In addition, we provide post abortion contraceptive services too.

Policy and Advocacy

A large number of women in India are unable to exercise their sexual and reproductive rights due a number of barriers – social, cultural, policy and access to information and services. We work in partnership with stakeholders to improve the policy environment towards enabling women to exercise their reproductive rights and choices. Our policy and advocacy efforts are aimed towards:

  • Advocating for increased choice of contraceptives in the national family planning program
  • Providing evidence and models to improve public private partnerships
  • Working with public sector to improve quality of services
  • Protecting and advancing access to safe abortion care
  • Advancing women’s access to safe abortion services

Eliminating Cervical Cancer

In 2020, an estimated 77,000+ women died in India succumbed to cervical cancer, implying that almost one in every four deaths attributed to cervical cancer occur in India. Although it is one of the most preventable and treatable forms of cancer, lack of awareness and low numbers of screening have led to an alarmingly low rate of survival for cervical cancer patients. Cervical cancer is the second leading cause of cancer deaths in India and there is an urgent need for intervention.

We are committed to providing integrated sexual and reproductive healthcare and eliminating cervical cancer. We raise awareness about cervical cancer amongst communities and counsel individuals on the life-threatening disease. To strengthen public healthcare, we have been orienting community health workers— Accredited Social Health Activists (ASHAs) and Auxiliary Nurse Midwives (ANMs) to reach out to more women with information. Currently, we are building a strong referral network with government hospitals to ensure that those who require further care can access lifesaving treatment.

Adolescent Friendly Services

Adolescents comprise of more than one-fifth of India’s total population. With the aim of securing the futures of millions of young individuals, Foundation for Reproductive Health Services India aims to provide dignified, client-centred information and services to adolescents between the ages of 15 and 19 years.

We are introducing a call centre, with a hub in Jaipur, to ensure that young people understand their bodies, sexual and reproductive health and can pursue the dreams of their choice. Our counsellors provide crucial information about sexual and reproductive health, sexually transmitted infections, contraceptive choices, and safe abortion, as well as offer referrals for these services. Adolescents are encouraged to visit our clinics located across Rajasthan: Alwar, Ajmer, Banswara, Jaipur, Kota, and Udaipur.

With the aim of reaching out to more young individuals, tie-ups with schools and colleges are underway. We have been building the capacities of Accredited Social Health Activists (ASHAs) and Auxiliary Nurse Midwives (ANMs) to enable them to work with young adults and impart information in a dignified and safe manner. In order to eliminate barriers faced by adolescents while seeking healthcare, we further provide ASHAs with a robust orientation on the Medical Termination of Pregnancy (Amendment) Act, 2021 and adolescent health.
